In the strangest turn of events, the latest South Park installment has fans drooling over the notoriously quiet, hooded character Kenny. Wait, WHAT?

Paramount+ dropped a first look at their upcoming exclusive event, South Park: Joining the Panderverse, in which Kenny isn’t his normal fourth-grade self. Instead, he is portrayed as a female, adult version of himself.

And Kenny isn’t the only one! The brief trailer teases “all your favorite South Park characters,” but depicts a genderswapped version of them, which also includes Cartman as a Black woman, Stan as a Latina, Butters as a mixed-race woman with a yellow buzz cut, and Kenny as an Asian woman with colorful hair and a cropped orange hoodie.

In light of the reimagining of the beloved characters, the internet is now thirsting over Kenny, with one fan loudly proclaiming, “The only takeaway anyone has from the new South Park special trailer is that we all agree we’d fuck adult fem Kenny.”

Others fans are not holding back! One posted an image of the character with the caption, “Thank you, South Park. She is all I’m going to be talking about,” and another wrote, “Why did they turn Kenny from South Park into a baddie?”

While the internet discourse has sure been fun, what’s actually going on here? The special, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is said to follow Cartman’s “deeply disturbing dreams” which foresee the “end of the life he knows and loves.” At the same time, the adults are worrying about the influence of artificial intelligence.

From this description, we can guess that the genderbending storyline appears in one of Cartman’s dream sequences, although Paramount+ releasing a trailer that focuses on that sole aspect makes it seem like the reimagined characters might play a bigger role.

Online theories suspect that the series is poking fun at the ongoing wave of diverse casting in Hollywood, which sees famed characters, originated by white actors, being portrayed by people of different races, genders, and sexualities — hence the “panderverse” of it all. Recent examples include the 2023 remake of The Little Mermaid, which cast Halle Bailey in the title role, and the upcoming Snow White remake, which has caused a stir over its supposed feminist narrative. One fan dragged South Park for being late to the game, stating, “They are always like 8 years late with their jokes. The Ghostbusters remake was in like, 2016.”

South Park: Joining the Panderverse follows the release of four other South Park exclusive events, including South Park: Post COVID, South Park: The Return of COVID, South Park: The Streaming Wars, and South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 2. In addition to the exclusive events, the long-running series — which first launched in 1997 — has been renewed on Comedy Central through its 30th season.

At this point, all we can say is…. South Park better know what they’re doing with this one.
