Jezersko in Pictures

Rory’s co-workers at the CPUC pooled together and bought us a weekend at a farm/retreat center/inn in Jezersko, a lovely alpine valley that’s only an hour away from Ljubljana but it seems like it’s on another planet. We used it all up last weekend–it turns out you get a lot more for your money at these sorts of places if you go after Sep. 1. We had 4 lovely, peaceful nights at the Senkova Domacija, a farm that has been passed on down the generations for about 500 years. To drive that point home, there was a nice book in our room that shows the family tree going back to Gospar Šenk, all the way to the staff you see running the place now.

The place has certainly changed in 500 years, as the current generation is practicing organic, free range farming of indigenous Slovenian animal breeds, and eco-tourism. That last part is where we come in–we stayed in a nice, cozy room in the smaller house, and all of the cycling, hiking, and other activities were close at hand. We want to come back to try the cross-country skiing–looks like a great place for that. They also made delicious meals.

Breakfast!

One day we were joined by our friends Chris, Shellie, and Tony for a hike up to the 150-year old Češka koča one of many kočas located all around Slovenia where hikers can stop for a beverage, a strudel, or a full meal. No cars can go up there–all the supplies are delivered up a cable from the valley below. This is one of those things that Europeans excel at–putting eating and drinking establishments in unlikely places.

We’ll let the photos tell the rest of the story….

Cerka sv. Andreja (St. Andrew’s Church), with garden in foreground)

Chickens running around everywhere. They are Styrian hens a native breed to Slovenia.

Part of the Kamnik mountain range, and the view out our front door. Make it over that wall, and you’re in Austria.

Krista and the goats. Don’t worry–the top part of the fence is the electric part. No goats were shocked in the taking of this photo.

Jezersko-Solčava sheep, a Slovenian indigenous breed

Decisions, decisions….

Krista, Chris, Shellie, and Tony at the 150-year old Češka koča where the turkish coffee is strong and the apple strudel is great!

The small cemetery at Sve. Andrej.

Selfie time.

In the village of Jezersko.

Looks like a scene from a carton of yogurt or package of cheese.

Highway sign roughly translating to “school crossing.”

Thank you, CPUC-ers!
