There's been one in the works for a while, but it now looks like a Flash Gordon movie reboot is finally happening.

Kingsman filmmaker Matthew Vaughn was in line to direct the project in 2015, but that job has now been handed to Overlord's Julius Avery with Vaughn still on board as producer. Avery will also write the script, according to Deadline.

Avery grew up in Australia and was apparently a huge fan of the Flash Gordon comic, created and originally drawn by Alex Raymond in 1934 to compete with the Buck Rogers strip.

The story followed the adventures of Flash Gordon, a polo player and Yale University graduate, and his companions Dale Arden and Dr Hans Zarkov.

It began with Earth threatened by a collision with the planet Mongo and Dr Zarkov inventing a rocket ship to fly into space in an attempt to stop the disaster, as Flash, Dale and Dr Zarkov come into conflict with Ming the Merciless, Mongo's evil ruler.

Flash Gordon was famously made into a movie in 1980, starring Sam J Jones in the lead role and soundtracked by Queen.

The latest adaptation was a TV series which aired on Syfy in the US from 2007 to 2008.

Julius Avery's JJ Abrams-produced Overlord is releasing next week (November 7) in the UK, and follows several American soldiers dropped behind enemy lines the day before D-Day as they discover secret Nazi experiments.
