Though it is a tough call, mine is probably the front cover piece of Dungeon Crawl Classics #4: Bloody Jack's Gold (published in 2006):

Image
Wow, that is an excellent one, worthy of his classic period.

Most of the recent stuff I've seen from Otus doesn't seem like he's trying very hard - lumpy figures and lacking in detail. Maybe it reflects the amount he was paid for them. The Slough Feg covers for instance look like he knocked them out during a lunch break, and lack the kind of arresting characters (people and monsters) we used to expect from him.

I think my first reply in this post may have been hasty. Yes, the Moldvay boxed set cover is good, and it brings back memories, but I remember before I got that Basic D&D boxed set, I was completely awe-struck when some kids at my school were playing D&D, and I saw the cover of one of the books they were using.

Image

A giant smashing up a castle? And people falling off ? How cool is that to a 10-year old!! I think it's also one of his most dynamic, fluid pictures he's done. Some of them (the Moldvay boxed set, the front of Deities & Demigods) seem somewhat posed. This one has great depth perspective including the fore-shortening of the giant's arm.

I quite like this one. Especially the look on the wizard getting blasted.

This reminds me a bit of Disney's Fantasia. What the land of evil fairies might look like.

And this is all-out bizarre and funny. Very Ren n' Stimpy.

I was thinking about that aboleth scene, glad you guys posted the pic. Love the belly suckers like a remora, makes you think about what an aboleth would stick itself to.

That's my problem with this thread. I don't own or know about a lot of recent EO art.

By all the orbital gods, that is awesome. That looks exactly like the type of D&D games I play.

The colors remind me of a old Erol piece that I've been looking for and can't seem to find anywhere on the net. It was a Knight riding a Blue Dragon and was used only once for a calendar TSR put out in the wee- early 80's.

Ahhh...here is is! Although it's a bit low-rez.

Image

Not a new piece of E.O.'s. But its one that isn't as well known compared to his other works.

I wish he would put out a coffee table book. I would pay coffee table book prices for such a book. I'd even get a coffee table to showcase it.
I like his drawings, but his work with paint is so damn psychedelic. Next Level.

Some better than others but overall awesome pics. My favorite classic D&D artist. I too wish they would put out a coffee table type book collecting his classic art. I missed out on the Elmore kickstarter but Otis should do one and I'd be all over.

I could look at Otus illos all day (well, I pretty much do). Profoundly influenced me to want to have games to match the look of his art.

I always loved his artwork from Star Control II. The character design is one of the most notable things about that game, and his drawings certainly helped convey the weirdness of alien races like the Orz and Zoq-Fot-Pik.

Also, I named a special flower in my campaign after him, the Ero Lotus.

Blood! Blood and sacrifices to all the Orbital Gods! Those two Erol Otus pieces are awesome.

Every new piece of art by Otus is like a revelation of new realms of heretofore unimagined weirdness.

I think that it was a Kickstarter project, and as such the only place to buy it is on the used book market, but somehow I doubt it will show up there in any great numbers.
