Few limited series captivated 2010s audiences more than “Big Little Lies.” David E. Kelley’s star-studded mystery saga won eight Emmys throughout its two season run on HBO, immediately prompting speculation about a third season. While the high profile cast led by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have many other demands of their time, Kidman delighted fans in late 2023 by announcing that she had officially begun developing Season 3 alongside Witherspoon.

Details about a potential Season 3 are scarce, but the show’s ensemble cast members have taken many opportunities to express their excitement about returning. As it turns out, they might have Kidman’s family to thank. In a new interview with Elle, Kidman explained that her teenage daughter’s questions about the fate of her character Celeste Wright made her realize that she had to move forward with a third season.

“My daughter is the one who watched both of the series and went, ‘Okay, there’s just no question, there has to be a third,’” Kidman said. “She’s like, ‘Celeste, she’s not coping in the second one, what is she doing?’”

The actress and AMC spokesperson went on to say that the five year hiatus following Season 2’s conclusion in 2019 created a natural opportunity to revisit characters at a new point in their lives.

“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives,” she said. “Because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating.”

While Kidman acknowledged that coordinating the schedules of multiple A-list actors is never an easy task, she said that the genuine friendships that they formed over the first two seasons motivated everyone to fit Season 3 into their plans.

“I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different,” she said. “But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness and you want to spend time together.”
