Sverre Fehn - Nordic pavilion for the Venice Biennale, 1958. Via.
While the projecting trees might be the most recognizable image of the design, the most impressive aspect is Fehn’s amazing control and manipulation of daylight. The roof is comprised of a fluted fabric membrane that covers two layers of tall, thin, perpendicularly stacked white concrete beams. The harsh, high contrast and direct sunlight found in Venice’s southern geography is filtered to a soft, shadowless, milky, indirect light, which is characteristic of the sunlight found 1000 miles north in Fehn’s native Norway. A masterwork.
