Sunderland AFC have announced that manager Paolo Di Canio is to leave the club after five games without a win at the start of their Premier League campaign.
The Black Cats sit bottom of the table after picking up just one point so far and are now looking for their third manager in six months, with Di Canio having been appointed at the end of March to replace Martin O'Neill. "The club would like to place on record its thanks to Paolo and his staff and wishes them well for the future," read a club statement.
Di Canio was in charge for just 12 Premier League games in the north east, winning two, and will be replaced on a short-term basis by Kevin Ball, with a permanent successor to be announced "in due course". The 3-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion FC on Saturday was Sunderland's third straight league defeat and they will start life without Di Canio when they take on Peterborough United FC in the English League Cup on Tuesday, before hosting Liverpool FC next Sunday.
